My understanding was Indie doesn’t allow full scene conversion to proxy formats, but does support asset conversions. It’s widely used over in the Redshift world.
Speaking of, RS does handle packed primitives. It doesn’t directly support their usage for rendering (mostly for viewport support), but you can slice it up into proxies for quick rendering once you have things the way you want. Does Arnold not have a similar workflow? I’m still a bit new to Houdini (coming from Maya), so are packed ABC/bgeo different from packed primitives?

As a Houdini user, Daryl will be able to provide more insightful info, but as a fellow user I can give some basics.
Redshift has a system called Out of Core rendering. This allows you to render scenes that escape the amount of VRAM on your card(s). I know for a fact that textures and geometry can go out of core, I'd need Daryl to confirm particles and volumes (forgetting atm).
When VRAM is saturated, it will start paging data from disk to memory then to the GPU in a continuous feed as buckets are rendered, rather than disk to GPU as you normally would. So with Redshift you aren't constrained to VRAM size as you are with other renderers.
Note that when going OOC, rendering speed will reduce dramatically, often times closer to their traditional CPU counterparts. That's scene depending however. I haven't personally tested this, but don't use system RAM usage from Mantra as a metric for Redshift. RS has a highly efficient data system, so actual VRAM usage may be less than that. General rule of thumb: 500K unique quads = 60MB VRAM.

So, I had to eventually switch to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Kind of risky, but Houdini does work there. Though I may have to install a newer driver version than the Long Term Support one (375.66), since I'm experiencing Lattice deformation artifacts, even when the deformation applies.
That's interesting. I run 375.66 on CentOS 7 and pretty much all of my apps run fine. I'm surprised it's not working on Fedora, I've built up a habit whenever working with NVIDIA drivers where I enable FullCompositionPipeline and ForceFullCompositionPipeline in the X Server settings (You'll need sudo to write to Xorg). Other than that just set PowerMizer to Prefer Maximum Performance and on each login run `nvidia-settings -l` to load the config. You might need to activate coolbits though, simple enough.
Over in the Redshift forums it was discovered that 381.xx was unstable for us, so maybe there's some weird CUDA/OpenGL bug in that branch. I've only ever used the LTS drivers.
Another Redshift/Houdini user, Varomix, also recently upgraded from CentOS to F26 and his system is running perfectly fine.

You shouldn't have to install any extra libraries, they should have been included in the Houdini install. DCC's package their own Python libraries/interpreters to my knowledge, as they often add custom modules.
It's been a while since I've played around with Houdini, but my first instinct would be to either reinstall or reset my config and see if things work (life lessons from Maya and Modo).
